Sean Oakes

Principal and Creative Director

In 2000, Sean founded SOS, a specialized creative studio based in Brooklyn, NY. For over a decade, he has set the mission and creative vision for the highly regarded firm; inspiring passionate clients, solving business problems through creativity, and garnering industry recognition.

Sean has always been devoted to pioneering new ways to communicate through technology. His obsession with how digital tools can affect business goals, learning and social change are at the heart of the SOS culture.

Prior to SOS, Sean held Design and Art Director positions at New York start-ups and agencies throughout the 90s. He is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has been recognized by The Webby Awards, Communication Arts, SXSW Interactive, Business Week, The Smithsonian, and Apple. Sean lives in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn with his wife, three children and a persnickety turtle named Holly.

Caitlin Endyke

Caitlin Endyke

Project Manager

Caitlin joined the SOS team after years spent in the nonprofit sector– experience that has prepared her to handle the demands of projects that seek to make a big difference, both on the web and in the real world. She comes to SOS after leading her former nonprofit through a full website redesign and rebranding, a process that allowed her to see first hand how innovative technologies and clear messaging can help organizations more effectively meet their missions.

Caitlin hails from New Hampshire, holds a degree in History from New York University, and once performed in the circus. She currently lives in Brooklyn, where she’s always on the hunt for a good cup of iced coffee and a great pick-up soccer game.

Miriam Kasell

Miriam Kasell

Senior Designer

As an Art Director at SOS, Miriam brings a stylistic breadth of experience from non-profits, small businesses, museums, and the health care industry. She is passionate about affecting positive change through smart, multidisciplinary design. She enjoys responding to diverse client needs with interactive design solutions, exacting typography, and making things look pretty.

Miriam was born in Denmark, and has degrees from Oberlin College and Parsons The New School of Design. She lives in Brooklyn, plays well with others, and takes pleasure seriously, just like Charles Eames said.

Roxie is thrilled to be the official studio dog and mascot at SOS. She takes her role here very seriously, and is always eager to lend a paw for the greater good. She enjoys long strolls to the Carousel at lunch, barking in her sleep from the back of someone’s chair, advising on font and color decisions, and consulting on new music choices for studio tunes.

Roxie was rescued in Los Angeles in 2004. She’s settling into middle age, as feisty as she’s always been, with a few less teeth and a studio full of adoring fans.

Updates From SOS

Careers at SOS: Interactive Project Manager

April 3, 2017

Fast-paced interactive UX/Design agency in DUMBO seeks energetic, experienced and highly organized Project Manager to join, and help run, our small but mighty team. You are an excellent communicator who can oversee all facets of our interactive projects, while seamlessly managing budgets, time tables and deliverables for multiple projects at once. You can communicate effectively and confidently to clients and team members alike, and can navigate internal team dynamics in conjunction with client requirements. You’re a natural born project manager who seeks to solve problems actively. To sum up, Project Management is in your blood, and it’s obvious.

  • Create project plans, milestones, status reports and other documentation relevant to project completion and account management. Communicate deadlines and project information effectively to all members of project teams through collaborative online tools (like Basecamp), as well as email, shared docs, bug trackers, etc.
  • Create estimates and scopes of work for new projects, drawing on historical project data to create accurate budgets and proposals for new projects or continued work.
  • Manage internal team workflows, task assignments and track budgets. OWN the project schedules and be responsible for working with information architects, visual designers, copywriters, and the technology teams to solve problems and execute project tasks on time and on budget.
  • Be the primary point of contact for all clients. You’ll be our air traffic controller – documenting client needs, communicating tasks to the appropriate teams, and following up to ensure items are properly addressed.
  • Assist team members in executing project phases. This might mean reviewing wireframes for usability, cross-checking visual designs, leading focus group tests, organizing and uploading content, or identifying and documenting bugs in developed products.
  • Responsible for all client invoicing and financial tracking. This means forecasting work sold, analyzing project profitability, and working within detailed billing parameters, especially for government projects.
  • Recruit freelancers/contractors and build a solid network of design and programming professionals.
  • A sense of ownership for everything you deliver. This requires an entrepreneurial spirit, a lot of autonomy, and an ability to set aside ego and build something amazing.

What we’d like to see:

  • Experience in interactive project management. Mastery of the interactive development process including in-depth understanding of content development, information architecture, interaction design, visual design and technology.
  • Amazing organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. Clearly articulating ideas and objectives to creatives, developers and clients alike is essential.
  • Must be a self-starter with an extraordinary work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit. You’ll have a proven track record of making complex projects happen. This is not a passive role.
  • Flexibility, sense of humor, and a team-mentality are assets we are looking for; as well as someone able to earn the respect of creatives, technical staff and clients
  • Proficient with: Mac OS, MS Office, project management and bug tracking applications, basic CMS knowledge.

  • Experience working with education, children’s media and non-profit organizations
  • Copywriting, editing
  • Familiarity with Agile development

Office culture at SOS is important to us. We’re nice. You should be too.

We are committed to serving Education and non-profit based clients to make the world a better place. Our firm offers full health benefits, paid time off, and a great working environment!

Please send a cover letter (this is essential to be considered), resume, links to sites you have produced, and preferred salary range to No calls please.

Alex’s Lemonade Redesign Wins Big at 2013 W3 Awards

October 18, 2013

Our warm and friendly redesign for long-time client, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, is being recognized by the prestigious W³ Awards this year. After months of strategy, design and highly-custom technology development, we relaunched the site for this children’s cancer charity in April. Already they’ve seen engagement and excitement around fundraising take off. It’s honor enough to be associated with this amazing organization, but a W³ Award is pretty sweet too.

The W³ Awards honors creative excellence on the Web, and recognizes the creative and marketing professionals behind award winning Websites, Web Video and Online Marketing programs. Simply put, the W³ is the first major Web competition to be accessible to the biggest agencies, the smallest firms, and everyone in between.

The American Museum of Natural History Takes the Party Mobile

After lots of careful planning and pixel pushing, we’re thrilled to unveil the new, improved Host an Event mini-site for the American Museum of Natural History’s Event and Conference services team. SOS designed their original Flash-based site back in 2006, and although the old version was still performing and driving sales leads, it was time for a big update. We kept many of the visual elements from the original, but completely rebuilt the technology. The new version is optimized for iPads, tablets and smart phones. Another big new feature is the Lookbook.  Developing a section like this speaks to the glamour and high-fashion mindset of their events and prospective clients. Cheers team!

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Launches New Site!

With 275+ grants awarded in support of Childhood Cancer Research, Alex’s continues to provide hope for a cure for so many kids throughout the country. We are honored to be a part of this mission.
